Title / Titel Swiss Feed Database
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung In order to achieve high livestock productivity and best quality of animal products, farm animals have to be fed according to their species-depending requirements. Feedstuffs thus represent the first chain link in the human food chain. It is well documented that appropriate feeding helps to prevent disorders and diseases and it is therefore essential for the well-being of our livestock. Agronomists, veterinarians and farmers are responsible for quality assurance in animal (and food) production. Hence, they have to rely on well-founded knowledge in feed science.
Students of agricultural sciences and veterinary medicine are trained in feed science during their education. Up to now, no comprehensive database covering all farm animals exists in Switzerland. With the development of a web-based, relational database, all relevant information about feedstuffs are retrievable for students and the general public in a user defined way thus benefiting from the advantages of modern technology. For example, the numeric feed matrix of the database will be presented in the form of tables as well as comparative charts. Students will acquire important skills in using and handling a modern database as an integral part of their formation in feed science. This practice oriented database will accompany them as a valuable information tool through their professional life as well.
The Swiss Feed Database supports the education of future agronomists and veterinarians and contributes to the quality assurance in food production. Based on the internet, the database will be accessible to all interested parties.
